IMPORTANT -- PLEASE READ:
This online course is designed to train ordinary church members on how to start a literacy ministry/outreach almost anywhere in the world (primarily designed for adults; start a student class; over 265 languages available!). The training uses a methodology developed by The PEACE Plan's partner--Literacy & Evangelism International (LEI)--and is based on their book entitled Teacher Training Workshops: A Literacy Leader's Guide (abbreviated TTW) by Dr. Bert Dyson and Tedd Lodes (see link below). The course methodology uses the TTW book (available in English and French; for the literacy teachers/trainers only ) and "primers" for the students--short booklets available at LEI's website in over 265 languages. The primers contain a consistent lesson format of picture words, syllables (letter combinations), and Bible stories to learn how to read in the student's native language. The student will also learn how to write and do simple arithmetic. So, to teach/train literacy to a class of students, the literacy teacher/trainer works from both the TTW book (in either English or French) and the primer for the language they are teaching.
The following course video is conducted in English only. So the requirement to use this course is that the literacy teacher/trainer be proficient in English. However, if the literacy teacher/trainer is proficient in French, they can likely follow the course in English and learn the methodology using the French TTW book. Also take note that the video course does not follow the TTW book in sequential order by chapter (in other words, it does not go sequentially from chapter 1 to 17 in order), but rather goes through various chapters in an order that will still make sense to the literacy teacher/trainers who are learning the methodology.
For this course, the literacy teacher/trainer will use the following materials:
1. Teacher Training Workshops: A Literacy Leader’s Guide (TTW English version) by Dyson and Lodes. For the French version, click here.
2. The primers for teaching Spanish (to demonstrate the literacy teaching methodology). For Spanish, these are a two-booklet set entitled Nuevos Caminos Book 1 and Book 2. These two primers will train you in the use of the LEI methodology for teaching people to read and write.
3. To see if primers are available in the language for which you desire to start a literacy ministry/outreach, go to LEI's website here (primers available for over 265 languages): https://www.literacyevangelism.org/primers.
Regarding the use of primers, Literacy & Evangelism International (LEI) grants to users the right, privilege, and license to publish and distribute LEI materials pursuant to this agreement. LEI will continue to be available to users to train teachers to use LEI materials. LEI, its successors and co-publishers will retain all copyrights to materials.
